The first step in filing for a patent is defining your patent
Your patent will include the text for the definition. It will most likely include schematics or drawings to explain the new technology or design. Patents fall into an array of types, which include:
- Provisional, a patent to use immediately while you bring your idea to market or test its value
- Utility, a fully vetted patent for use in the market
- Design, a conceptual patent on how materials appear and the user experience or interface
- International, a Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT) international protection of a technology
Use patent search tools to verify you are first to file
Search existing patents to insure yours is the first filed for your new technology or design. Search your region first, and then search markets where your product may be sold, licensed, or used.
